Advice

Don't go there in touristic season or holiday. Try to avoid the crowd to fully enjoy this natural wonder. If you are adventurous and brave enough try black water rafting in the caves. Choose a not touristic season for it, you might be lucky to have an absolutely private tour for the group money as we had.

Description

Waitomo Caves are part of big cavern system under Waitomo village in North Island New Zealand that have largest in the world population of glowworms (Arachnocampa Luminosa). Only here you could see them lightening whole cave with blue bright dots in the darkness forming a complete cover for the ceiling. This is absolutely majestic! In the caves, you would see glowworms in the dark, highlighted sticky webs that they create to attract night insects, observe stalagmites and stalactites, hear the stories of the past and see remains of the animals trapped into the cave. There are many options you could do in this eco attraction. Take a guided walking tour. There ara several companies providing tours to the caves. I mentioned one that we used and we really liked it because this company limits groups to 10 people maximum. We had a wonderful funny guide who told us a lot about glowworms and caves formation in an easy joking way. We picked the tour with an ability to take pictures that are more pricey. But bare in mind, it will be dark and you won't be able to do any good one without a tripod, enough time and other peoples in the group.

Alternatively, take black water rafting tour that includes glowworms observation and adventurous. but easy level rafting.

This place is 100% must see for adults and children.
