Advice
From April to October a local market holds place here. Chek dates in advance. Local people do not recommend walking there at night. It might be not safe and some weird people could show up. But it's totally safe during the day. Don't be scary, as it's a common problem in many great public parks in the world.
Description
Kuirau Park is a wonderful free public park in the center of Rotorua where you can experience and do a lot of things locals do. There are volcanic thermal activities such as hot water springs and small mud boiling pools that are for observation only and are safe as there are well fenced; paddling pool where you could play with children; 2 foot pools (covered and not) with thermal water where you can sit and have a free relaxing spa while chatting with your friends; a boiling hot thermal lake where you could walk over its bridge and smell a slight sulfur air smell. All this is for free. This park is simply wonderful and has everything for even more family activities. Children playground, barbecue (bbq) and picnic facilities, nice short working track through the gardens.
There is one great article about this park written by a local person. There is also a legend about this park and its lake. It's always more interesting to visit the place that has a story :) You could find this information in more links.
